Book Launch | Murray Shaw
Join us for this presentation from local author, Murray Shaw, as he shares from his book, Gilgamesh as the Beginning and End of Western Civilization: A Poetic Rendering of the Epic and Commentary.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest written story in the world, dating to 2200 BCE. Gilgamesh was a king in the Sumerian city of Uruk, in what is now southern Iraq. He lived at a pivotal point in history, before empires, before patriarchy had taken charge, when women still played central roles in the life of Uruk and in all other Sumerian cities. He is the world’s first hero, the model for Hercules. And his foibles still mark our culture and western civilization. Especially 4 foibles: disregard of women, disregard of the environment, valuing wealth and fame above all other values, and a driven search for immortality.
Shaw’s book re-tells the story of Gilgamesh, and what we have to learn from it, if our civilization wishes to re-invent itself and survive.
